Last summer, in one of my garage sale hunts, I found a sports jersey. My kids LOVE jerseys. So, of course, I paid the fifty cents for the jersey. A total score, or maybe not. Now granted, I was aware that VICK was the name on the back of the jersey, and I was aware that he was in jail for his involvement with dog fights, etc. He seems to be a fairly despicable fellow, but hey, it's a jersey and it's cheap.
I may have forgotten about the fact that little Brandon, now 9, may be getting old enough to be aware of the situation---rather than being the young kid who is just excited to be wearing a jersey.
So, this Fall, Brandon went to school with his "new-to-him" sports jersey on. He comes home a little concerned. "Mom, the guy on this jersey was sent to jail" etc. I didn't really know what to say. So, I waited till Dad came home to discuss this concern/issue. Dad always comes to the rescue. Dad told him, "oh, yeah, this jersey is worth more, because they are really hard to find now. Vick will be coming back into football in a couple years and this jersey will be worth so much." I was impressed with my husband's ability to pull this one out. Although, I haven't seen Brandon wearing the jersey since.
It goes back to what my husband will sometimes tell me, "There is a reason it was at a garage sale." Another favorite phrase he has, "You get what you pay for." So true. My husband is not lacking in wisdom.
But hey, VICK is getting out of jail soon, so maybe he is on the upswing.
The moral of the story: you may want to leave the VICK jersey at the garage sale, or hope that it will become a collectible----just like Beanie Babies (ha-ha)! I am just ahead of the curve, right?
Or maybe it can be a Halloween costume. So many options, and all for 50 cents. Even the worst decisions can be rationalized!!!

A Thursday Moving Sale
A Thursday Moving Sale is NEVER a bad thing (or rarely, I should say!) What that means, is you won't have much competition, and the people selling are anxious to get rid of lots of things---usually furniture too, and usually pretty cheap. Well, there wasn't any furniture, but wow I found some great things! Here are some of my finds from today:
Wooden Dough Bowl (it is the length of my loveseat) $10
I just wanted to show the length of the "bowl" (I may need to paint it!). I figure in an emergency it could be used as a canoe for the babies---I mean can you ever be too prepared?
Pruning shears $2 each
More Princess Costumes for Maddie ($2 each)
Star Wars Darth Vader Costume $2 (getting ready for Halloween the cheap way!)
Radio Flyer wagon $15
Bike with Training Wheels (looks brand new for Benj for next year) $20
Bike with training wheels for Maddie (for next year) $10
Navy blue "London Fog" winter coat and matching snow pants $8 (Perfect for Ethan)
Brand New Spiderman Costume (black) in packaging $2.00 (size 4-6) Perfect for Benj or Ethan
Can you tell I love costumes??? I just love a great sale! What fun---although not as easy with three toddlers in tow! Enjoy the yard sales, the season will soon be over!!!

Fabric & Fun
Good times-----good yard sales!
Fabulous Moda fabric (some already in squares)! (Varied in price from 50 cents to $2.00 for each pack of squares or fabric.)
Punches ($10.00 for the box---Great for making paper dolls or Plan of Salvation kits for kids---I thought these might help a bit with Activity Days for the 8 year old girls!)
Huge Bean Bag $2.00 (matches the small ones I have!)

$1 for flag picture (I have got to stop with the Patriotic stuff---you can only have so much!)

It's been funny to see how much scrapbooking stuff is at all the sales this year--clearly digital is the way to go----everyone is selling all of their supplies! Those poor craft stores must be losing SOOOO much business with everything going digital!!!

Back to School Yard-Saling
Why waste money? I hit the yard sales today, and basically found back-to-school clothes for the kids. How awesome! I found seven pairs of 6 slim jeans/pants for Ethan, plus long-sleeve shirts, sweatshirts, and t-shirts. Grand total for him: $22.00. Yeehaw! Since Brandon is a bigger kid and Ethan is thin, Ethan cannot wear any of Brandon's hand me down pants. But who needs hand me downs from brothers, when you can get hand me downs from strangers for SO cheap!

Then at another yard sale, I found six long sleeve GAP shirts for Brandon at $1 each. I also found 3 sweatshirts for him for $1 each. SCORE!
Then I found tons of clothes for Maddie and Dylan (which they may not need THAT much, but I couldn't help myself at 50 cents each.) I did have to pay $1 for the POLO sweater and some of the other Dylan clothes, but they were too cute to pass up.

Decorating on a Dime!
OK guys, this is why I LOVE to garage sale! Today was garage sale heaven! Talk about decorating on a dime! I had incredible luck in finding decor for my home----and such AMAZING deals! Why pay retail? Seriously! Anyway, I had to show my finds. I am so grateful for my husband, as soon as I returned home, he got to work putting up all my finds! He is such a stud! I really appreciated getting all the stuff up and in the right place! It puts me in such a good mood! So, here are some of my finds:
The $1 circle mirror! It definately needs some paint, but for a dollar? Are you kidding me? What a no brainer! Love a great sale like this! The mirror is quite large; you can't see my husband who is holding the mirror. Best $1 ever spent! The mirror does have to go in the garage temporarily until it is painted!
At another sale, I found all these dragonflies. Dragonflies hold special meaning for me since Benj, Maddie, and Dylan's birthmom had a special love for dragonflies. I am really loving the new look! Nothing like a little something for a bedroom semi-makeover!

Aren't these iron frames so cute? LOVE them! Luckily there were five; one for each of my children! They were only 50 cents per frame! One of the glass insert pieces is broken, so I will have to replace it! (The $1 store is great for that!)
I also found these clipboard type hangers. They were $2.50 for the two of them. Lucky again to have five of the clips. That way I can display one piece of artwork for each child!
At another garage sale, I found this Mexican oil painting. Perfect for the dark stairway going to my basement. The garish colors add a light and brightness to the dark space!

The guest room is coming along! Inch by inch we go decorating, as we find the deals! Can you believe she gave me all these curtain rods (many new in the packaging for 10 cents each? Seriously, it doesn't get much better than this in my opinion!)

I also love square everything; plates, wreaths, you name it, so how could I resist this square wreath for $1? Maybe now the "Valentines Day" decoration can be taken off my front door!!! I need to add something to it, so we shall see!
And they say the power of the dollar is weak! Not at garage sales!!!

Garage Sale Fun!
Well, today I went to my first garage sales of the season. Besides kid clothing, I also found this nice framed stitchery. I talked the lady down from $5 to $4. I probably could've gotten it down more, but I wasn't feeling particularly brazen today. I wasn't in the mood to do too much negotiating. The stitchery reminded me of my favorite little store in Springville, "The Porch". It looks like another stitchery I bought at the Porch for about $40. I definately prefer $4. (If you are ever in Springville, you will have to stop by "the Porch" on Main Street. It is decorating heaven.) I also found all of the Work & Glory books for $1 a piece, so I guess I have quite a bit of reading for a while. Anyway, not the most exciting garage sale day, but fun nonetheless!!!

This is one way to handle insomnia---at $1 per book, I figured this might help me fall back to sleep at night, or give me some good historical fiction relating to the church!!! Just a little light reading. Ha!
