I have never been the biggest fan of football, but I guess that is about to change! My husband came to me several weeks ago and asked me in an especially kind tone if our little Brandon could play football this year. I didn't think much of it, I know little Brandon really wanted to play so I said, "Of course!" No big deal.
I guess I did not understand what a big thing this would be to both my Brandon's. My husband reminded me nearly every day that he had to pick up the uniform, etc. on a certain day. As soon as he returned from picking up all the gear, my husband tells me that everyone was asking little Brandon if it would be his second year playing---as he is such a big kid. They were all excited that he was so big and only in his first year. (Meanwhile, I am thinking---the child is 8, really, is this such a big deal? But I didn't want to ruin his moment, so I didn't!) You have never seen such a proud papa. His heart was swelling with such pride, his buttons nearly fell off his shirt. Not to mention how excited little Brandon is to play football, as his long-term goal is to play football!
I was surprised to find out that my son has try-outs for 2 hours a night this whole week. My husband was excited, and I am just thinking---really. Is this really necessary for 2nd graders? Can't they just put all the kids in a couple teams and call it a day? Does it really need to be such a rigorous process for 8 year olds? Really? I guess people get a little more excited than I would've anticipated over football. I guess I shouldn't be that surprised considering my Brandon's are two of those people! I think the people who plan these things must have too much time on their hands (and clearly don't have 5 kids).
One more question I have---why is football so darn expensive compared to the other sports? My husband claimed it was the uniform. After seeing it, I hardly think that is it. They have to turn in their helmets, and we had to go buy some of the protective gear---so why does it cost over $200---and this is for the city league or whatever it is. EEK!
I just don't get it all, but I guess I better get into gear and get excited. I will be attending lots of games. Do you think they will allow me to jump on the field before every game and beg the other players not to hurt my baby?
Maybe I will now pick up some of the proper sports lingo related with football. Maybe my husband will not laugh at me when we talk about sports in the future. There are some benefits to all this---right???
The biggest benefit is the huge smile found on the faces of both my Brandons. I do love to see them THIS happy.
And hey, Brandon supports me putting the kids into piano even though that would not be his or their priority---(among other things)!
